16/4/2007: PNE trials new School Zone alert system
Billed as a "better driver warning system for school zones", PNE's "SafeZone" is being trialled outside five NSW schools from this month.
On March 21st 2007, PNE Electronics commissioned the first of five “SafeZone In-Road Safety Warning Light Systems”, which are being evaluated by the NSW RTA as part of a trial around 100 Sydney metropolitan schools.
SafeZone was one of five solutions selected from the nearly forty offered to the RTA, but is most notable for being the only Australian designed and manufactured in-road flashing light system selected.
SafeZone differs from other in-side flashing signs and other in-road light systems in several very important ways, including the fact that it is entirely self-contained, requires no external power or control signals, and offers functionality equivalent to hard-wired systems that cost considerably more to install and maintain. Indeed, thes features very adequately showcase PNE’s ability to develop innovative, cost-effective solutions with significant local and export sales potential.
Comprised of in-road flashing lights placed down the median strip roughly every five metres for the full length of a school zone, SafeZone offers a potentially ‘better warning solution’ for drivers approaching and travelling through school zones because it more reliably informs them that a school zone is active, without them having to take their eyes of the road ahead. Even if drivers miss the road-side warning sign at the start of the zone (a commonly reported occurrence where the sign is obstructed by trees or other vehicles, or because drivers are more focused on the road ahead, not the side of the road), the SafeZone lights remain highly visible.
